Game 4 call by Bob Miller, Jim Fox to be heard inside Staples Center

Thanks to some scrambling by the Kings, the voices of team TV announcers Bob Miller and Jim Fox will be heard inside Staples Center on Wednesday during Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, and will also be preserved for posterity.

Miller and Fox were exiled to the sidelines after the first round of the playoffs because the NHL’s TV deal grants NBC exclusive broadcast rights. Kings executives arranged for them to call the game and any other potential clinchers if the Kings don’t finish off the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.

Their call on Wednesday will be piped throughout the arena at concession stands and in restrooms. It will be recorded for possible future use on the team’s website or a commemorative DVD.

Miller, the 2000 recipient of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Foster Hewitt award for broadcast excellence, is in his 39th season as the Kings’ voice. Fox is in his 22nd season.

Miller said he had waited until Tuesday to write down the words he will say if the Kings are in position to win the Cup. He did the same, he said, before Wayne Gretzky passed Gordie Howe to become the NHL’s all-time scoring leader.

“Just something to have there so I don’t stumble,” he said.
