Career highlights for Abby Wambach, who plays her final match Wednesday
The U.S. women’s soccer team plays China on Wednesday night in New Orleans, and it’s not only the final match of its U.S. World Cup champions’ victory tour, it is the final match ever for Abby Wambach, one of the greatest soccer players in U.S. history. A look at some of her career highlights:
— 184 goals scored in international play, the most by any player, male or female
— Named FIFA’s women’s world player of the year in 2012
— Won Olympic gold in 2004 and 2012 and the World Cup in 2015
— Scored 13 World Cup goals, the most of any American woman
The most famous of Wambach’s 184 goals came in the 2011 World Cup. With the U.S. trailing, 2-1, in the 122nd minute of a quarterfinal match against Brazil, Wambach scored on a header to tie. The U.S. then won on penalty kicks to advance. You can watch the goal in the video above.
