Finding the folk art of Bali

Admire the brightly colored crafts and intricate carvings of Balinese artisans on a 15-day tour with folk-art collector Gordon Frost.

Participants on the trip, which begins Aug. 15, will stay in Ubud, the arts capital of Bali. They will visit museums and galleries by day and attend dances and listen to Balinese gamelan music at night. They also will join villagers at temple festivals and ceremonies.

CANADA, ALASKA

A gourmand’s Inside Passage

SAIL and sip en route to Alaska on an eight-day food-and-wine theme cruise from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Juneau.

Film fans’ open-air fest

HOBNOB with filmmakers, stars and movie fans at the Locarno International Film Festival on a weeklong trip that begins Aug. 5 .

The festival, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, draws an international crowd to watch new films on a giant outdoor screen in Locarno’s Piazza Grande.

Stephen Farber, host of Landmark Theatres’ “Reel Talk” film previews, will lead tour participants in discussions after the screenings.

The group also will attend private meetings with industry members.

Participants will take a boat trip to the Borromeo Islands on the Italian side of Lake Maggiore. Another outing will be to visit Bellinzona, known as the city of three castles.

LIBYA

On the path of the ancients

EXPLORE classical ruins and the nomad Berber culture on a 16-day tour of Libya with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The tour begins Sept. 10 in London, where participants will examine artifacts in the Libyan collection at the British Museum. The group will be accompanied by Linda Komaroff, LACMA’s curator of Islamic art.

Members then fly to Tripoli to view the ruins of the Roman ports of Leptis Magna and Sabratha on the Carthaginian trade route.

They will travel south through the Jabal Nafusa mountain range to the desert oases of Nalut and Ghadames.
