Montana — Montana’s Race to the Sky, Feb. 11-17, is one of the most mountainous race courses in the sport of distance sled-dog racing. The 350-mile competition begins in Lincoln and crosses the Continental Divide, reaching an altitude of 7,000 feet. New Mexico — Native American dancers and singers from 500 tribes will compete at the Gathering of Nations Powwow and Miss Indian World competition, April 28-30, at the University of New Mexico Arena in Albuquerque. Before the dancing competitions is the spectacular Grand Entry of Dancers. The Indian Traders Market is expected to draw more than 800 artists, craftspeople and traders. Pennsylvania — The theme at the March 6-13 Philadelphia Flower Show is “America the Beautiful.” Displays include prairie flowers, meadow grasses, evergreens and poolside and city garden plants. South Carolina — The ninth annual Native Islander Gullah Celebration takes place Feb. 4-27 on Hilton Head Island. The Gullah are the descendants of slaves who settled along the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia. Texas — Fiesta San Antonio, April 15-24, honors the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto with more than 100 events all over the city.
