Formula One opts out of North America in 2009

For the first time since 1987, there will be no Formula One Grand Prix race in North America next year.

The international -- sort of -- circuit announced today that it will not return to Montreal in 2009. Formula One dropped its Indianapolis race earlier this year.

It’s an odd time for Formula One to be abandoning North America, as some sports marketers believe NASCAR has peaked and could be vulnerable to a challenge from other circuits.
