Kings vs. Oilers: Homestand ends with victory over Edmonton

The Kings ended a woeful eight-game homestand on an positive note with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night at Staples Center.

Dustin Brown, who was sent off for tripping, came out of the penalty box, took a pass and fed a streaking Jarret Stoll, who flicked in a wrist shot for a 3-2 lead seven minutes into the second period. Drew Doughty then gave the Kings some breathing room, converting an Oilers turnover into a goal two minutes into the third period.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who had allowed 11 goals in his two previous starts, stopped 24 of 26 shots and didn’t allow a goal after the first period.

Stoll had two goals, including one into an empty net with two minutes left in the game.

The Kings had lost six of seven games on the homestand and had won only one of their last eight games going into Saturday night.

Kings forward Wayne Simmonds suffered an ankle injury in the second period, finding himself at the bottom of a scrum caused from a check by Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. Simmonds did not return during the period.

The Kings’ Marco Sturm tied the score by being in the right place at the right time at the end of a 4-on-2 rush. The puck came off defenseman Kurtis Foster’s stick and went right to Sturm, who slipped a shot into the corner of the net 11 minutes into the game.

Anze Kopitar ended a nine-game goal-less streak by redirecting a loose puck in front of the net 15 minutes into the game. Andrew Cogliano tied it a minute later, flicking in a pass he took at the goalie crease.
