It looks like I left last night’s Alemany-Saugus game at just the right time. After the Centurions took a 14-0 lead at halftime in what looked to be a tough defensive battle, Saugus took advantage of two second-half interceptions and a fumble recovery to cruise to a 35-7 victory.

The lopsided victory proves the Saugus defense can be one of the stingiest around as long as it stays focused. Against Westlake, the Centurions enjoyed a 27-0 lead early in the third quarter before defensive miscues almost cost them the contest. Obviously, Alemany’s Patrick McKernan-led offense might be a step or two behind Westlake’s, but Saugus proved that it’s a balanced team -- not just RB Ryan Zirbel and QB Desi Rodriguez.

Of course, Zirbel had another big night. According to The Signal, he rushed for 191 yards and three TDs, the first of which came off a 50-yard run in the first quarter. Now that we know he can run circles around the Warriors, let’s see what he can do against Notre Dame next week.
