Crist & Co. should be too much for Loyola

The Serra League finally begins play this week and No. 7 Notre Dame is on most so-called experts’ lists to win what would be its fourth consecutive league title.

I know those Seraph- and Patriot-killers over at Crespi are lingering behind the upscale neighborhoods just a short DB9 drive away on the 101, but I think the Knights are going to be top dog in this league once everything is finalized.

Of course, a talented Loyola team might have something to say about that. Following back-to-back victories over Chaminade and St. Francis, the Cubs are looking to prove they’re more than just a potential upset-maker this season.

It won’t be easy stopping QB Dayne Crist from showing off the arm and scrambling ability that’s earned him a free trip to South Bend next fall. Crist has passed for 1,653 yards and 14 TDs so far and he’s the centerpiece for a team that has state bowl-game aspirations. And, as Eric Sondheimer noted, he now has a fully-intact O-line in front of him.

The Knights also have some DI-level talent in WR Jeff Dickmann, RB Thaddeus Brown, DL Wes Horton (USC) and LB Anthony McDonald (Notre Dame).

So barring any major upset, Notre Dame should run with this one.

What: Loyola (4-3) at No. 7 Notre Dame (6-1)

When: 7:30 p.m.

My prediction: Notre Dame 36, Loyola 16

Calpreps.com prediction: Notre Dame 28, Loyola 12
