Saugus could take home three league titles this winter

With Foothill League play getting underway this afternoon, it’s kind of weird to imagine Saugus -- always the perennial bridesmaid to other Santa Clarita Valley programs such as Hart, Valencia and Canyon -- taking home three seasonal sports titles this winter.

Based on their strong tournament play and a couple early stumbles by Hart (however, the Indians’ boys did win their tournament), both the Saugus boys’ and girls’ basketball teams enter their contests with Valencia as favorites to take their league titles.

The Saugus boys are coming off wins over competitive squads from Ventura and Beverly Hills and have amassed a 13-2 record. The Centurion girls are 13-3 and boast one of the league’s best players in junior forward Gabby Conn, who’s averaging 12.4. ppg and 10.9 rpg.

And despite having lost practically its entire offense to graduation, defending champion Saugus is the slight favorite to win the boys’ soccer league title against a decent Hart squad.

So if Saugus can pull off three winter sports titles in conjunction with its strong performances in the fall sports season (girls’ cross country, football), Centurion Way might be home to the best high school sports program in the SCV this year.

Of course, there’s always the spring season ...
