Cathedral was on a roll entering Wednesday’s boys’ basketball game against Camino Real League rival St. Paul. So why would Coach Sheldon McCorn be concerned about traveling to Santa Fe Springs to face the eight-loss Sworsdmen?

Maybe because he’d watched St. Paul fight his squad tooth and nail on Jan. 9 in Los Angeles, losing by only three points on the Phantoms’ home floor. Would the host Swordsmen pull off the upset this time?

Not a chance. Sergio Leon had 14 points, Bryan Mejia and Jordan Dupart each added 13 and the Phantoms ran St. Paul off its own floor, 61-42, to clinch at least a share of the league title and up their record to 22 wins in 23 games.

The Phantoms dashed St. Paul’s hopes early on, racing to a 15-5 first-quarter lead and widening the gap to 32-18 at the break. And the visitors didn’t let up in the second half, using a 16-4 spurt to make it a 26-point bulge and cruising from there.

Steven Saeinz had 10 points in a losing cause for the Swordsmen (14-7 overall, 4-3 in league), who find themselves in a three-way scrum for second place with La Salle and St. Monica. Cathedral can claim the title outright Friday night with a victory over fifth-place Cantwell Sacred Heart.
