Ventura may have been held to its lowest scoring total of the season, but the Cougars still came away with their third victory this season over cross-town rival Buena.

Behind another trademark, spread-out scoring effort complemented by a stingy defense, Ventura (ranked No. 14 by The Times) outlasted the Bulldogs, 36-27, Thursday to claim at least a share of the Channel League title. And after they blow past San Marcos on Monday, the title will be solely theirs to treasure.

Still, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves -- the Cougars got one heck of a final nonleague game to play on Saturday when No. 23 Marlborough rolls into town. It’ll be interesting to see how ‘vanilla Ventura’ counters the one-two punch of Talia Caldwell and Nikki Speed.

I know it’ll be close, but I have a feeling we’re less than 30 hours away from seeing the Cougar crew post their first victory over a Times’ top 25 team.
