Girls’ basketball: It’s Dixon vs. Nyingifa in an all-star showdown

Long Beach Poly and Redondo played two extraordinary games last season, with Poly winning a couple of close ones over the Sea Hawks.

They play again tonight, 7:30 p.m., at Redondo in a matchup that pits the Southland’s two pre-eminent players against each other.

Jasmine Dixon leads Poly (18-2). The 5-foot-10 Rutgers-bound guard/forward has her team ranked No. 1 in by The Times. The Jackrabbits are No. 3 in the nation in the USA Today ranking.

Atonye Nyingifa leads Redondo (20-2). The 5-11 UCLA-bound guard/forward has her team ranked No. 8 by The Times. If her teammates perform like they did on Thursday in a victory over No. 7 Mira Costa -- they made nine of 18 three-point shots -- then this game could be a classic.

But with two of the best players in the country on the floor at the same time, there should be some classic performances no matter what.
