The success of the El Camino Real girls’ soccer team is well documented, with eight consecutive City Section championships. Now the guys are getting their kicks in the finals.

The male Conquistadores, seeded 19th, last won a City title in 2002. But they are in Saturday’s City final against top-seeded Banning. And if ECR pulls off the win, it would complete a very impressive postseason run. The Conquistadores have already defeated third-seeded South East and second-seeded Taft in the playoffs.

Have teams underestimated El Camino Real?

‘If any team underestimates another in the playoffs, that’s foolish,’ ECR Coach David Hussey said. ‘We tied a lot of games (eight) in the regular season, which lowered our seed. Sometimes in league play we had a letdown. In the playoffs we are much more focused.’

El Camino Real has already gotten far in the playoffs, maybe farther than expected. And now that the Conquistadores have reached the final, Hussey doesn’t believe his team is satisfied with just getting there.

‘We’ve talked [the championship] since playoffs started,’ Hussey said. ‘Winning the title was the goal and would be very disappointing if we don’t win it.’
