By all accounts, Renaissance Academy has the size to prevail in the boys’ Division V final this morning at Arco Arena in Sacramento, but don’t count out Ross Branson, which is led by Harvard-bound guard Oliver McNally. If there’s a player who can devise a way to win a big game against even bigger odds, it’s a Harvard kid.

He’ll need to watch out for Anthony Stover, a 6-10 junior center for Renaissance Academy, who averages more blocked shots (7.4) than rebounds (6.8). The Wildcats also have 6-8 sophomore DeAndre Daniels and 6-7 junior Hector Harold combing the paint.

Branson should have ample inspiration, as Coach Jonas Honick has announced he will retire after this game. He can play golf with Oakland McClymonds Coach Dwight Nathaniel, who is also retiring after tonight’s Division I boys’ final.

It’s amazing to what lengths Northern California coaches will go to inspire their teams against those from Southern California.
