What’s up with the officiating in state basketball playoffs?

Officials deserve praise, not ridicule, because of the tough job they must do, but it might be helpful if the CIF starts assigning three-person basketball crews that have actually worked together rather than trying to put together all-star units for the state basketball playoffs.

If that means it’s an all-Southern California crew or an all-Northern California crew, so be it. Something must be done because it appears the officials here in Sacramento and in other regional playoff games have struggled at times in continuity and consistency, particularly during girls’ games.

The Mira Costa-Mitty girls’ Division II final Friday drew particular criticism on press row. Then came 52 fouls in the Mater Dei-Mitty Division II boys’ final, a game in which more legitimate fouls could have been called.

At least discussion is needed how to improve the quality of the officiating in the state tournament.
