He wasn’t angry. Wasn’t peeved at all. But you could say Lakewood Coach Andy Miramontes was curious. ‘Who does the softball rankings?’ Miramontes asked.

I told him who -- preps writer Martin Henderson. His name is right on the rankings!

Miramontes could not understand why Henderson has Long Beach Wilson ranked higher than his Moore League champion Lancers, ranked No. 13 by The Times. Especially since they beat the No. 10 Bruins earlier this season.

This is where I had Henderson’s back and quickly replied: ‘Martin isn’t just looking at that one isolated game. Wilson may have lost to you but has beaten some real quality opponents.’

Miramontes conceded, ‘That’s true, Wilson has beaten some pretty good teams.’

Then, he pointed out something irrefutable -- that last night Lakewood beat Wilson once again. ‘Hopefully, Martin will see that we now have beaten Wilson twice this season.’

I’m sure Martin will see that, and I’m also sure he’ll make adjustments for next week’s rankings.

(Note to Martin: Never worry, my friend, I always got your back -- preps writers have to stick together!)
