Boys’ tennis: Irvine University is big winner at Costa Mesa regional

Irvine University Coach John Kessler was all smiles Friday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center as five of his Trojans qualified for next week’s Round of 16 in the Southern Section-Toyota boys’ individual tennis championships. Jason Lin in singles and the doubles team of Matt Siow and Michael Tang as well as the doubles team of Kevin Masaki and John Huang, all pictured, will compete Friday at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Other players who advanced to Friday’s round from the Costa Mesa regional include top-seeded Fabian Matthews of Corona Del Mar, Justin Thompson of Troy and Derek Siddiqui of Los Alamitos in singles and Evan Bolles and Mark Bloom of Dana Hills and Evan Hashimoto and Ali Makmalchi of Santa Margarita in doubles.
