In a matchup between two of the best high school teams in Southern California, No. 2 Long Beach Poly took advantage of some poor tackling by No. 3 St. Bonaventure on a late drive in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead at halftime at Long Beach Veterans Memorial Stadium.

With Long Beach Poly senior quarterback Morgan Fennell making two big runs and completing a key third-down pass to tailback Daveon Barner, the Jackrabbits drove 61 yards in 14 plays to score the first touchdown of the game. Fennell capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Stanjarivus McKay with five seconds remaining in the second quarter.
