Mater Dei girls’ basketball player Kathryn Haugen has been selected as one of six recipients of the John Wooden High School Scholar-Athlete Award, becoming part of the first brother-sister tandem to win the prestigious honor. Steve Haugen won the award two years ago when he played boys’ basketball for Mater Dei.

This year’s honorees will receive their awards at halftime of one of the Wooden Classic games Saturday at the Honda Center. The winners were selected for their academic, athletic and service achievements and were picked from a pool of 561 high schools in Southern California.
