Girls’ volleyball: Corp named Gatorade state player of the year

Orange Lutheran‘s Lauren Corp was named the 2008-09 Gatorade California volleyball player of the year on Tuesday after leading the Lancers to the Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals this fall.

Corp, who has signed with St. Mary’s College, finished with 479 kills and 43 aces for the Lancers (30-5) and was named the MVP of the La Jolla tournament and Orange County Championships. Over the summer, she was part of a team which won the USA Junior Olympics Girls’ Volleyball Championships 18 open tournament gold division national title.

In addition, she sports a 3.42 grade-point average and has been nominated to take part in the Congressional Student Leadership Conference and the National Youth Leadership Forum. She also volunteers for her school’s student-mentoring program and is a assistant youth volleyball coach.

Corp becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National volleyball player of the year award, which will be announced later this week.
