Boys’ basketball: Bishop Montgomery defeats Taft, advances to final

Thanks to its 60-55 double overtime victory over Taft on Monday, Bishop Montgomery will play Campbell Hall slayers Arlington (Va.) Bishop O’Connell in the National Division championship game of the San Luis Obispo Mission Prep tournament at 8 p.m.

Richard Solomon scored 16 points to lead the Knights, ranked No. 11 by The Times, in the supposed upset over the No. 7 Toreadors. Teammate Justin Cobbs added 15 points. Michael Williams netted 20 points and Terran Carter added 16 for Taft, but it wasn’t enough.

The Knights will have their hands full in tonight’s finale against Bishop O’Connell (also the Knights) which pounded previously undefeated No. 9 Campbell Hall, 63-36, on Monday -- the Vikings’ worst loss in more than five years. Keegan Hornbuckle had 12 points and Deuce Johnson scored 10 for Campbell Hall.

The Vikings will play Taft for third place at 5 p.m.

In other games, Gary Ricks scored 11 points in Sylmar‘s 58-37 victory over Los Osos. The Spartans will play Sacramento Sheldon for fifth place and Los Osos will tip off against Covington (Wash.) Kentwood in the seventh place game.
