Russell Otis isn’t coaching Dominguez these days, but his influence is still being felt by the Dons.

Interim Coach Duane Cooper attributed a recent run of success that included eight consecutive victories to the lingering imprint of Otis, who is on paid administrative leave while the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigates an unspecified allegation of criminal misconduct against him.

‘The stuff he’s been able to do with these guys is remarkable,’ Cooper said. ‘I don’t take credit for that.’

Dominguez (12-4 overall, 1-0 San Gabriel Valley League), ranked No. 4 in the Southland by The Times, recently defeated regional powers Fairfax and Etiwanda in a five-day span.

‘These guys know how to win and when you have some success, it gives you confidence,’ Cooper said. ‘Winning breeds winning.’

Making the Dons’ success all the more amazing is the fact they are winning without standout Jordan Hamilton, whose hardship waiver was denied by the Southern Section. Cooper said the Texas-bound Hamilton still comes to games and some practices.

Junior guard Keala King established himself as one of the top players at the recent Les Schwab Invitational in Portland, Ore., where the Dons reeled off four consecutive victories to win the tournament title. Cooper said senior guard Marcus Moody has been the most pleasant surprise.

‘He’s been able to give me a consistent effort, made big shots in big games, made big defensive plays all the time,’ Cooper said.

Consistency has been a buzzword for Cooper, who said his players haven’t always given him their best effort in the early going. Dominguez opened the season by splitting its first eight games, including a 29-point loss to second-ranked Westchester.

‘We have spurts of relaxed defense and we have spurts of very good defense,’ Cooper said. ‘I just want consistency.’

Cooper said he has not spoken with Otis or received any indication whether Otis expects to return as coach this season. Otis did not return a call seeking comment.

Dominguez next plays league rival Downey on Friday.
