Baseball: ECR, Cleveland open with impressive wins

West Valley League powers Woodland Hills El Camino Real and Reseda Cleveland opened the baseball season Friday with impressive pitching performances.

Sophomore Jose Cardona threw a complete-game three-hitter in El Camino Real’s 4-0 victory over Moorpark in the Easton tournament. It was his first varsity game. John Wilson threw five shutout innings and Juan Perez had two hits in Cleveland’s 8-0 victory over Ventura.

In other Easton tournament games, Chatsworth defeated Burbank Burroughs, 9-6. Derek Neely hit a two-run home run and finished with five runs batted in for Chatsworth. Ray Palafox hit a two-run home run for Burroughs. Sean Ecker threw a complete game with six strikeouts to help Alemany defeat Quartz Hill, 4-3.

Taft defeated Grant, 9-2, with Cody deSpain hitting a home run in the debut for first-year Taft Coach Scott Osder. Harvard-Westlake and Hart finished in a 6-6 tie after the game was called because of darkness in the eighth inning.
