Bolsa Grande’s season is in limbo after nearly $12,000 worth of equipment was stolen from two outdoor storage sheds last week. The Matadors had to cancel their scheduled season opener against Saddleback Valley Christian, and all practices have been suspended until the team can replace the gloves, bats, helmets, cleats, catching gear and pitching machine that were taken.

‘When we discovered that our team and players’ gear had been stolen, my heart dropped,’ Coach Dan Strobehn said. ‘Our young men have worked so hard to prepare for the new baseball season, and the last thing they needed was a distraction of this magnitude. It is unfortunate they will suffer due to the dishonesty of a few.’

Principal Denise Jay said the school cannot afford new equipment and noted that many of the players’ families are too financially strapped to pay for replacement gear considering that 70% of Bolsa Grande’s students come from economically disadvantaged households.

The school is accepting equipment and cash donations. Checks can be made out to Bolsa Grande High School Baseball and mailed to the school at 9401 Westminster Avenue, Garden Grove, CA 92844.
