Westchester started the second quarter with a dunk and ended it with a three-pointer at the buzzer, taking a 37-25 halftime lead over Mater Dei in the Southern California Division I regional championship at the Galen Center.

The Monarchs are struggling to stop the Comets inside and outside, as big man Reggie Murphy has had his way in the paint and Westchester has made five three-point baskets, three by Jordin Mayes.

Denzel Douglas’ three-pointer at the halftime buzzer gave the Comets a 12-point lead after they had trailed by one point at the end of the first quarter. Mayes has 14 points on five-for-six shooting.

Tyler Lamb already has 17 points for Mater Dei, but it appears he forgot to bring his teammates with him from Orange County. Gary Franklin Jr. has only three points and is struggling with his shot, making only one of 10 attempts.

Westchester is shooting 44.1% to Mater Dei’s 30.3%.
