Birmingham, the third-place team in the West Valley League, is giving league champion Chatsworth trouble in this City Section Division I semifinal game.

Randy Medellin’s RBI single in the fourth inning scored Kevin Torres to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead over the Chancellors. The inning started with a walk to Torres by Chatsworth pitcher Christian Lopez. A two-out single by Erik Munoz kept the inning alive. Then Medellin delivered on an 0-and-2 pitch.

Chatsworth Coach Tom Meusborn pulled Lopez after he hit Nick Acosta with a pitch to load the bases. The ace of the pitching staff, Angel Rodriguez, came in, and struck out Daniel Rivas to end the inning.
