Word had been spreading all month about Leo Lambert III, a freshman running back at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. He was supposed to be the next phenom back for the Knights.

On Friday in his freshman football debut, Lambert lived up to expectations. He rushed for 240 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 38, 7, 70 and 60 yards in a victory over Gardena Serra.

He just had too much speed for defenders. Any kind of opening and he was gone.

It’s a return to prominence for the Lambert family. There were five Lambert brothers who grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Four of them were baseball standouts at Chatsworth in the 1980s _ Gene, Reggie, Chris and Leo Jr., Lambert’s father.

The fifth brother _ Dion _ was a football standout at Granada Hills Kennedy and UCLA.

Dion is now the head coach at Kennedy, and he’s the one who introduced Leo III to football.

So how come Leo III isn’t at Kennedy?

‘I don’t know, man,’ Dion said.

Lambert is also a 400-meter runner, so beware when track coach Joe McNab gets to work with him.
