MELBOURNE, Australia —
American Dan Cassidy stunned Australian Davis Cup player John Fitzgerald Tuesday to win the $100,000 Victorian Open tennis tournament, his first career Grand Prix victory.
Cassidy, 23, has been a professional for only five months. The Hollywood, Fla., resident belied his lack of experience and world ranking of No. 126 by defeating Fitzgerald, 7-6, 7-6.
His 1-hour 40-minute victory earned Cassidy $15,000. Fitzgerald collected $7,500.
