The stock market staged a late retreat today as an attempt at a rally ran out of gas.
The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials closed down 9.05 at 1,189.82.
New York Stock Exchange volume was about 88.88 million shares compared with 67.82 million shares Wednesday.
