A motorcyclist speeding on Foothill Boulevard in Sunland early Thursday hit a curb and was killed, authorities said.

Prentice L. Ellard, 20, of Tujunga, who told Los Angeles police after the accident that he had had “a bit too much to drink,” died during surgery at Holy Cross Hospital, according to officer Richard Dehemmer.

Ellard was heading west on Foothill Boulevard about 1 a.m. and was trying to turn onto Jardine Avenue when he ran off the road, hit a curb and was thrown off the motorcycle, Dehemmer said. Ellard was traveling too fast, he said.

The collision sent the motorcycle hurtling into a utility pole and a chain-link fence before it landed in flames near a house under construction, Dehemmer said.
