San Diego Roundup : Navratilova Set to Play in La Costa Tournament

The $500,000 Chrysler Women’s Team Championships, an eight-team doubles tennis tournament featuring Martina Navratilova, is scheduled for March 1-3 at the La Costa Hotel and Spa.

The top eight singles players in the world, according to the year-end computer rankings, will be invited to participate. The eight invitees will select their partners from a pool consisting of the next 12 highest-ranked singles players and those who have won Grand Slam singles or doubles titles the past five years.

Each match in the tournament will be winner-take-all. First-round matches are worth $25,000 to the winning teams, semifinal matches $50,000 and the tournament championship $200,000.

The Steve Garvey/Michelob Celebrity Golf tournament is scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at Singing Hills Country Club in El Cajon.

Among the expected participants (along with Garvey) are Terry Kennedy, Tim Flannery, Tim Lollar, Graig Nettles, Kurt Bevacqua, Dave Dravecky, Jay Johnstone, Robin Yount, Lance Parrish, Paul Molitor, Mike Marshall and Mike Tully.

The entry fee is a tax-deductible $250. Proceeds benefit the San Diego State athletic department and the Pace Center for Career Development.

Lee Trevino will be honored as the MONY Comeback Golfer of the Year at a media luncheon Monday at the La Costa Country Club. Trevino finished 12th on the PGA money list in 1984 with $282,907, increasing his lifetime earnings to $3,037,092. He is only the third golfer ever to have reached $3 million, having been preceded by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. . . . The United States National Hot Rod Truck Pull and Mud Bog Drag racing championships are scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. The competition will feature four-wheel drive funny cars on one track and mud-racing dragsters on another. Advance tickets are on sale at Teleseat and Ticketron locations and the stadium. Advance prices are $15, $11 and $8. Ticket prices are increased $1 at the door. Children’s tickets are half-price and there is a $2 discount for military personnel. . . . The 1985 Bicycling and Triathlon extravaganza is set for Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. at Plaza Hall, located downtown at 202 C Street. Connie Carpenter, the gold medal winner of the 1984 Olympic women’s road cycling race, will be among those appearing. Tickets are $5.50 in advance and $6.50 at the door with children under 12 admitted for half price.
