Celebrity Tournament To Benefit Boy Scouts

Professional baseball players, Bobby Grich, Kurt Bevacqua, Rick Honeycutt and Fred Lynn, along with former pro basketball great Elgin Baylor and singer Johnny Mathis are just some of the celebrities scheduled to participate in the Great Western Sports/Celebrity Golf Tournament, Jan. 14, at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

Company-sponsored teams and players will participate in groups of four. Each foursome will be assigned a celebrity player. The cost of $250 will benefit the Boy Scouts of America, Great Western Council, Van Nuys.

Following the tournament will be a banquet and an auction of special sports items. The banquet will cost $35 per person.

The golf tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast. There will be a ‘shotgun’ start at 10 a.m. The banquet begins at 6 p.m.

National Champions at Burbank

The first Burbank Softball Invitation will be held Jan. 18-29 as a fund-raiser for the Regional Junior Olympic Amateur Softball Assn. Tournament openings are still available in Mid-Senior (18-and-under), Jr. (15-and-under) and Minor (12-and-under).

The Burbank Amateur Softball Assn. will play host to the event. Among the teams participating are the California Raiders of Lodi. They are three-time girls 18-and-under fast-pitch Jr. Olympic National Champions.

Mason Park Registration

Softball, T-Ball and baseball registration for boys and girls at Mason Recreation Center, 10500 Mason Ave., Chatsworth, will begin on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Various leagues will be offered for different age levels.

The registration fee is $40 for T-Ball for children 5-6 and 7-8 and for softball for ages 9-12. A fee of $42 will be for junior softball girls ages 13-15 and boys baseball, ages 13-15. The age is determined as of Jan. 1, 1985.

Registration fees include a jersey, hat, officials, trophies, all-stars and pictures. The last day for registration is Feb. 23rd. Individuals interested in being a volunteer coach should contact the center.

Registration for boys and girls ages 5 1/2 to 15 years in T-Ball, baseball and softball interested in the Northridge Little League will take place Jan. 5-6 until 4 p.m. at the Little League Complex, 18747 Devonshire Blvd., Northridge. Various leagues will be offered for six different age levels. Registrants should bring their birth certificates.

Tryouts will be the first two weeks of February and the leagues will begin play the third week of March.
