1 Mile of Benedict Canyon Drive Closed

More than a mile of Benedict Canyon Drive was closed Monday when half the roadway was undermined by water.

At first the damage was attributed to rain in the area, but Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Elizabeth Wimmer said later that an eight-inch water main broke early Monday and caused a minor landslide. It was repaired a few hours later.

Major damage became apparent late in the afternoon, when sections of the pavement began to collapse, and police closed the road from Mulholland Drive to Hutton Drive.

Los Angeles police Sgt. Nick Barbara said the closure might last for some time because it appeared that the entire roadway might have to be rebuilt.
