Huntington Beach : Parents’ Group Dropping Drive to Recall Trustees

A coalition of parents has abandoned a recall petition drive against three Huntington Beach Union High School District trustees. Members of the group say they are not giving up the fight, however, but instead will channel their efforts toward next November’s election.

Facing a Jan. 28 deadline for collecting the more than 14,000 voters’ signatures needed to force a recall election, the Committee for the Advancement of Responsible Education (CARE) has stopped circulating its petition. But several members plan to meet Thursday evening to draw up a platform for candidates in the next election.

The committee had collected more than 10,000 signatures, said Mary Campbell, a CARE leader. “That’s a lot more than those people (the trustees) were elected by,” she added.

The recall effort was prompted by the forced retirement last year of Paul Berger, who was principal of Marina High School. The move was upheld by trustees Ronald Marcus, Brian Lake and Stephen Smith. Berger was popular with parents, teachers and students.
