Guard Dwayne (Pearl) Washington scored three baskets and assisted on a fourth during a 10-2 run in the second half Tuesday night as Syracuse, ranked seventh by Associated Press and eighth by UPI, rallied to defeat Boston College, 64-58, in a Big East Conference game before 27,993 fans in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse, N.Y.

The victory boosted Syracuse to 9-1 and 1-1 in the league, while the Eagles dropped to 10-2 and 1-2, with both losses on the road. Last week, Boston College took top-ranked Georgetown into overtime before losing by two points.

Washington and forward Rafael Addison tied for scoring honors with 20 points each. Trevor Gordon and Roger McCready led Boston with 13 each.

In a 5:20 span of the second half, while the Eagles had but one field goal, Washington sank a pair of 16-footers from virtually the same spot on the floor, Addison nailed a short jumper, Washington hit a fast-break layup and then dealt off to Wendell Alexis for another short-range basket.

“It was definitely a game of streaks,” said Addison. “They had their chance to put it away, and then we had our chance. We just happened to be ahead at the end.”

Georgetown 90, Seton Hall 70--All-American Pat Ewing hit 15 of 17 shots from the field and scored a season-high 33 points, leading the top-ranked Hoyas to their 25th straight victory in the Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

The 7-foot senior center totally dominated his smaller opponents in falling two points short of his career best. It was only the third 30-point performance of Ewing’s career and more than doubled his 13.8-point-per-game average.

The victory was the Hoyas’ second Big East Conference victory over the Pirates in less than a week and raised their record this season to 14-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Clemson 90, Georgia Tech 81--Vincent Hamilton poured in 27 points as the Tigers upset the Yellow Jackets, ranked ninth by AP and 10th by UPI, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.

Hamilton contributed eight of his points during a seven-minute stretch of the second half when Tech staged a torrid comeback from a 17-point deficit that once got the Yellow Jackets to within three before the Tigers pulled away again.

It was the seventh victory in a row for the Tigers (9-2), who were playing in their conference opener.

Tech (10-3) lost its second in a row and fell to 1-2 in the ACC.

North Carolina St. 51, Virginia 45--Terry Gannon scored 10 points to lead a balanced attack that lifted the Wolfpack to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory at Raleigh, N.C.

The decision broke a three-game losing streak for the Wolfpack, 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Tom Sheehey scored 14 points to lead the Cavaliers, 8-6 and 0-3.

An early second-half scoring spree put the Wolfpack ahead for good after a 22-22 halftime score.

Wake Forest 79, Furman 64--Guard Delaney Rudd scored 23 points, 19 in the second half, as the Deacons pulled away in the final minutes of this nonconference game at Greenville, S.C.
