A man was shot to death by Los Angeles police officers after he allegedly raised a loaded rifle in their direction. Lt. Charles Higbie said police were called to the Menlo Club on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after it was reported that a man carrying a rifle was on the premises. When police arrived, Robert L. Shaw, 25, had left, but he was later spotted in the 3900 block of Menlo Street. Officers using loudspeakers repeatedly ordered the man to halt and drop his weapon, Higbie said. He then started to raise the rifle while turning in the direction of officers and was shot, Higbie said. Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene.
