The body of a Stanton man who was killed in an apparent hit-run accident was found in a traffic lane on Interstate 5 near Irvine early Friday.

Faatama F. Togia, 46, “was struck at that location,” according to Sheriff’s Lt. Bob Kemmis. “It is a hit-run.”

The body was discovered on an I-5 southbound lane just south of the Sand Canyon Road exit.

Sheriff’s deputies took over the investigation Friday afternoon after it was determined that Togia’s body had been found outside Irvine city limits on county land.

Sheriff’s Lt. Bob Kemmis said preliminary results of an autopsy show that Togia’s death was caused by injuries sustained when he was struck by a car or truck.

A blue Toyota pickup truck registered to Togia, with damage on its right side, was found on the freeway shoulder.

Traffic near the scene was slowed during rush hour and throughout the morning as one of the three southbound lanes was closed by the investigation.
