L.A. Schools, Some Other Districts to Close Today to Note King’s Birthday
Several school districts, including Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Covina Valley, will be closed today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
Los Angeles city and county governments, state offices and some other school districts will celebrate the holiday a week later, on Jan. 21.
Federal offices, like most banks and retail stores, will remain open both dates.
The slain civil rights leader was born Jan. 15, 1929. One of the largest celebrations planned Tuesday will be the annual Martin Luther King symposium. Representatives from 50 Los Angeles high schools will gather at George Washington Preparatory High School for a program entitled, “Why We Can’t Wait.”
This past weekend, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn was keynote speaker at a memorial service held on the front lawn of the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center. The City of Inglewood also held a celebration Saturday at Darby Park, and a worship observance was held Sunday at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
Next year everybody will celebrate King’s birthday on the same day. Congress has formally designated the third Monday in January as the national holiday.
