Alan Haworth and Scott Stevens each scored twice, but it was a disputed goal by Craig Laughlin in the second period that provided the margin of victory for the Washington Capitals in a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota North Stars Monday night at Landover, Md.

The win moved the Capitals back into a first-place tie with idle Philadelphia in the National Hockey League’s Patrick Division.

Laughlin was dumped by Minnesota forward Bo Berglund as he took a shot early in the second period with the Capitals ahead, 3-1. Laughlin and the puck slid into the Stars’ goaltender, Gilles Meloche, who appeared to have stopped the shot before being bumped by the sliding Laughlin. Meloche lost control of the puck, which rolled across the goal line. Minnesota protested referee Denis Morel’s call, but to no avail.

New Jersey 2, New York Rangers 1--John MacLean scored with 1:17 left to play at New York to give the Devils the victory.

MacLean’s seventh goal of the season, a 35-footer from the left faceoff circle, beat goalie John Vanbiesbrouck.
