Golf : Peete Shoots 65 Again, Leads by 5 at Phoenix
Calvin Peete, statistically golf’s most accurate player, shot a second straight bogey-free, six-under-par 65 and expanded his lead to five strokes Friday in the second round of the $450,000 Phoenix Open.
Peete, 41, who has led the tour in driving accuracy for the past four seasons and in greens in regulation for three of the last four years, has a 36-hole total of 130.
“Last year, I won the Texas Open with only one bogey for the tournament,” said Peete, winner of the 1984 Vardon Trophy for the low stroke average on the tour.
“Once I get a groove going, like I have now and like I did in Texas, I can keep it going,” Peete, winner of eight PGA Tour titles, said. “I feel like I’m hitting the ball about as good as I can hit it right now.”
Bob Eastwood, Doug Tewell and Tim Norris shared second place at 135. Eastwood, a two-time winner last season, had a 67 in the mild, sunny weather; Norris closed up with the best round of the tournament, a 64, and Tewell shot a 68.
