Gibson Honored as World Series Hero

Outfielder Kirk Gibson who helped lead the Detroit Tigers to victory over the San Diego Padres in the World Series last year, will be honored Saturday at the Kansas City Baseball Awards Dinner.

Gibson, 26, will receive the World Series Hero award. He had two homers in the deciding fifth game of the series, one of them a three-run blast in the eigth to ice an 8-4 Detroit victory. He hit .333 and drove in seven runs in the series.

Earlier, he was named most valuable player in the American League playoff series with the Kansas City Royals, in which he hit .417. For the season, Gibson hit .282 with 27 homers and 91 runs batted in.

Others to be honored at the dinner are Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles as American League Player of the year, Rick Sutcliffe of the Chicago Cubs as National League player of the year, Dick Howser of the Royals as manager of the year and Willie Wilson and Dan Quisenberry as the Royals’ player and pitcher of the year.
