Burbank police said a 23-year-old Hollywood man arrested early Monday, then left handcuffed and unattended in the back seat of a patrol car, kicked out a window and ran off while officers were chasing another suspect.

Within an hour of the 2:45 a.m. escape, police using trained dogs found Joe Jacobs hiding in the crawl space beneath a nearby home, according to the police account. Jacobs was jailed for grand theft auto, said Sgt. Bob Kaight.

Michael Graydon, 30, also of Hollywood, eluded Kaight and his partner during a foot chase but was arrested three hours later walking down the street, Kaight said. Graydon was also jailed for grand theft auto.

According to the Kaight, he and his partner, officer Ron Cervenka, were on patrol when they spotted what they suspected was a stolen car and pulled it over near the intersection of Clybourn Avenue and Sarah Street.

Kaight said Graydon stopped the car, jumped out and ran off.

Kaight ran after Graydon while Cervenka stayed behind to arrest and handcuff Jacobs, who was riding in the car, Kaight said. After Jacobs was locked in the back seat of the patrol car, Kaight said, Cervenka ran to help Kaight search for Graydon.

The two patrol officers eventually lost Graydon and, when they returned to their car found, they had lost Jacobs as well.

“The window was smashed and there was blood all over the car door,” Kaight said. “He was gone.”

Additional Burbank officers and a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter were called out.

Both suspects were being held at Burbank jail in lieu of $1,500 bail.
