William Faust spent the night in Topanga Canyon fighting off an irate gopher after falling into a 30-foot-deep cesspool from which he was rescued in the morning. The 25-year-old Torrance resident said he fell when he kicked at some plywood that covered the hole, and the gopher apparently fell in later, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. William Larsen said. “That gopher kept charging him. He had to fend it off all night,” Larsen said. Faust was not injured.
