Reagan Meets With ‘Super Bowl Caliber’ Arms Negotiators

WASHINGTON — President Reagan met today with his arms control advisers, describing them as a “Super Bowl caliber” team of negotiators for new talks with the Soviets on nuclear weapons and the prevention of an arms race in space.
On the first full business day of his second term, Reagan met with his three chief negotiators--delegation head Max Kampelman, former Sen. John Tower and career foreign service officer Maynard Glitman--to begin laying the foundation for talks he would like to see start in March.
At a picture-taking session before getting down to business, Reagan told reporters the Soviets had not yet responded to the U.S. invitation for a March meeting in Geneva. Asked to characterize his negotiators, the President replied: “a great team--Super Bowl caliber.”
