A San Diego man was killed and another man was reported missing after a Navy helicopter crashed Monday night into the Pacific Ocean about 325 miles southwest of San Diego, a Navy spokesman reported Tuesday. Spokesman Ken Mitchell said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash of the anti-submarine helicopter, which sank shortly after hitting the water. Lt. Cmdr. Dave Carlson of San Diego, pilot of the North Island-based helicopter, died of injuries suffered in the crash. Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Ampong, of Lahaina, Hawaii, was not found despite an extensive search through the night, the spokesman said. Two other crewmen, Wickliff Paul and Michael A. Bumanglug, both of San Diego, were rescued shortly after the crash and reported in good condition. The accident occurred while the helicopter was practicing night landings on the deck of the frigate Reid.
