District Authorizes Sale of Heim School Campus
A resolution authorizing the sale of the Heim Elementary School campus has been approved by the district school board.
The school was closed at the end of the 1983-84 school year because of declining enrollment, and its pupils were transferred to Taft Elementary School. Enrollment was 184 last year and was expected to drop to 170 in the 1984-85 school year. The school’s capacity is 690 pupils.
Also closed was the 100-year-old Olive Elementary School, one of the oldest schools in Southern California.
The district reached its peak enrollment of 30,700 students in 1977. Enrollment has declined every year since and now stands at fewer than 25,000.
A declining birth rate in recent years has produced lower enrollments in many Orange County school districts. School officials said many districts in affluent areas are particularly affected by the trend because the high cost of housing keeps young families from moving in.
