Tennis Roundup : McEnroe, Connors Win in Indoor Quarterfinals

Top-seeded John McEnroe and second-seeded Jimmy Connors continued on a collision course toward Sunday’s final in the $300,000 U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championships Friday at Philadelphia.

McEnroe needed only 66 minutes to reach the semifinals, defeating fifth-seeded Yannick Noah of France, 6-2, 6-4. Connors, however, had to struggle for 2 hours and 6 minutes before beating Mel Purcell, 6-4, 7-6.

In other quarter-final matches, Scott Davis posted the night’s biggest upset with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over fourth-seeded Eliot Teltscher, and Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia scored a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Joao Soares of Brazil.

In today’s semifinals, Connors meets Mecir in the afternoon, and McEnroe plays Davis in the evening.

Sweden’s Catarina Lindqvist upset fourth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, at Key Biscayne, Fla., and will meet top-seeded Martina Navratilova, who eliminated fifth-seeded Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-2, 6-2.

In today’s other semifinal, unseeded Mareen Louie will face second-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd. Lloyd breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over seventh-seeded Bonnie Gadusek, while Louie ousted 13th-seeded Kathy Rinaldi, 6-3, 6-4.
