A woman police officer who was run over Thursday by a motorist stopped for suspicion of drunk driving died Saturday, and doctors transplanted her heart into a 49-year-old man, authorities said.

Deanna Rose, 26, who never regained consciousness at Shawnee Mission Medical Center after suffering severe head and chest injuries in the incident, was the first Overland Park police officer to die in the line of duty, Mayor Ed Eilert said.

Rose, a former deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, was run over about 2 a.m Thursday after she stopped a motorist for suspicion of drunken driving on Interstate 35 in Overland Park, a Kansas City suburb. Another officer, Sgt. Steve Ford, arrived at the scene minutes later and found her lying on the ground unconscious. Ford said there were tire marks on Rose’s left leg.

After Rose was pronounced dead Saturday morning, her body was transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center, where surgeons transplanted her heart into Donald L. Moore, 49, of Kansas City, Kan., a hospital spokeswoman said.
