A special Los Angeles Police Department task force cited 60 people Sunday on charges of operating off-road vehicles in the Valley foothills, authorities said.

Officer James Hiner said 117 youths and adults were cited during a weekend operation centered on Lopez Dam in Sylmar, Bell Canyon, at the southern end of Reseda Boulevard and several other locations.

Hiner said the citations involved misdemeanors and state vehicle code infractions, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Thomas Valention, 27, of Canoga Park was arrested Sunday on charges of evading arrest at Valley Circle and Bell Canyon boulevards.

Police were puzzled by the number of citations Sunday after 57 people were cited Saturday.

“You’d think after the word got out that they would have stayed away,” Hiner said.

Residents in the targeted areas have complained about noise from dirt bikes and other vehicles.
