Brian Sutter and Bernie Federko scored goals in the opening minutes of the third period at St. Louis as the Blues beat Detroit, 3-2, Thursday night and increased their Norris Division lead to four points over idle Chicago.

The Blues led the Red Wings, 1-0, when Sutter took a perfect feed from right wing Greg Paslawski on a two-on-one break at 5:24 of the final period.

Less than 30 seconds later, Joe Mullen intercepted a clearing attempt by the Red Wings’ Dave Williams and passed to Federko, who swept right and put in an easy backhander.

Defenseman Rik Wilson opened the scoring for the Blues in the first period on a power-play.

The Wings spoiled St. Louis goalie Rick Wamsley’s bid for his first shutout of the season at 12:20 of the third period when Lane Lambert scored from a crowd outside the crease, and Brad Park scored with 1:07 left.

Calgary 7, N.Y. Rangers 2--Kent Nilsson’s 25th goal of the season completed Calgary’s four-goal second-period rally that buried the Rangers at Calgary.

Nilsson also set up Mike Eaves twice in the third period after Calgary overcame a two-goal first-period deficit with seven straight goals.

The victory gave the Flames sole possession of second place in the Smythe Division, two points ahead of idle Winnipeg.

Boston 6, Quebec 5--Dave Reid scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and the Bruins pulled even with the third-place Nordiques in the Adams Division with a victory at Boston.
